Diary of a PyMaemo Beginner

PyGtk Code Snippets On Xournal

Hi everyone,

It’s been almost two weeks since I got my new device—the N810 Internet Tablet (aka NIT, Webpad).

As many of you know, I’ve been developing mobile apps for Nokia’s smartphones, particularly for Symbian devices like the N95, N81, and N79. However, my focus has recently shifted to PyMaemo, the Maemo version of the Python programming language. This new environment presents a steep learning curve, as the user interface is quite different from what I’m used to on Symbian phones.

This weekend, I started studying and practicing PyGtk+. I’ve managed to create a few basic “Hello World!” apps, but as you can imagine, that’s just the beginning. There’s still a lot to learn before I can develop more complex and useful projects.

One thing I’ve really come to appreciate is the N810’s educational capabilities. It’s an excellent tool for learning, arguably even better than a Kindle. The high screen resolution makes reading PDF books a pleasure, and I’ve been using the Xournal application to take notes and collect code snippets.

In addition to my work with PyMaemo, I’m also learning electronics using the Arduino microprocessor. With the N810’s USB Host Mode capability, I can connect the Arduino directly to the tablet. Once I get the USB input-to-output converter, I plan to start working on establishing a serial connection between the Arduino and the N810.

This device has truly opened up new avenues for both learning and development, and I’m excited to continue exploring its potential.
